Manny Malhotra also tallied and Patrick Dwyer notched a pair of assists for the Hurricanes, who have won six straight meetings with the Islanders. Anton Khudobin turned aside 38 shots as Carolina lost captain Eric Staal to a lower-body injury in the middle session.

Thomas Vanek recorded a goal and an assist while captain John Tavares added a tally for New York, which had its season-best three-game winning streak snapped. Evgeni Nabokov finished with 27 saves.

After a scoreless first period, Malhotra gave Carolina the lead 6:57 into the second, but Tavares answered 44 seconds later to knot the contest. Jordan Staal took a backhand pass from along the left-wing boards by Dwyer and beat Nabokov from alone in the low slot with 6:48 left in the period to put the Hurricanes ahead for good.

Sutter added much-needed insurance, firing the rebound of Jeff Skinner's shot past Nabokov for his first goal of the season. The tally proved crucial as Vanek converted a power-play chance with 25 seconds remaining.
