Guard Davon Reed scored 21 points and came up with a big steal in the final minute as short-handed Miami held on for a 70-61 victory over Georgia Tech on Wednesday night in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes (17-8, 7-6 ACC) also got help from a pair of freshmen as guard D.J. Vasiljevic and forward Dewan Huell scored 13 points apiece.

They were much needed as the Hurricanes were without starting point guard Ja'Quan Newton, who was serving the first contest of a three-game suspension announced before the game, and lost starting center Ebuku Izundu to an apparent leg injury early in the second half.

Guard Josh Okogie led the Yellow Jackets (15-11, 6-7 ACC) with 18 points while center Ben Lammers added 15 points and four blocks.

The Hurricanes led for most of the second half after going to the halftime locker room up 38-32 as an 8-0 spurt helped them overcome a 19-16 deficit midway through the first period.

Reed's jumper and Vasiljevic's 3-pointer gave the Hurricanes a 21-19 lead, and Reed's layup and free throw at the 8:05 mark completed the run.

The Hurricanes eventually built a 34-26 cushion thanks to four consecutive points by guard/forward Anthony Lawrence. He was fouled on a 3-point attempt at the 4:17 mark and made all three attempts, then was 1 of 2 from the stripe two minutes later.

The Jackets scored four quick points when guard Josh Heath had steals that led to layups on consecutive possessions, but the Hurricanes got some momentum back to assume the six-point lead going into the second half.

Georgia Tech came out in the second half and went up 46-45 on Okogie's corner 3-pointer, but Miami regained the lead on Reed's trey and Huell's back-to-back dunks.

The Hurricanes eventually worked their way to a 13-point bulge 63-50 before the Yellow Jackets responded with a surge that cut their deficit to 65-58 with less than four minutes remaining.

But they could get no closer.

The Hurricanes ended a 3:34 scoring drought on Huell's free throws with 1:11 left to make it 68-58. Georgia Tech got a 3-pointer from guard Justin Moore, but Brown's two free throws with 31.8 seconds left closed out the scoring.
