High-powered offense was not part of the game plan for either team Tuesday night when Texas Tech and 13th-ranked Tennessee squared off in the opening game of the Jimmy V Classic in New York.

The result was a bloody-knuckle battle, especially in the second half when scoring was a struggle on both ends of the court, and it took extra time to settle the outcome.

Texas Tech pulled off the upset, 57-52 in overtime, despite shooting 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the floor and 4-for-24 (16.7 percent) from 3-point range. The Volunteers were worse in both categories -- 19-for-71 (26.8 percent) and 6-for-40 (15 percent) from outside the arc.

Terrence Shannon Jr. led Texas Tech (7-1) with 18 points, while Kevin Obanor and Davion Warren added 10 each. John Fulkerson paced Tennessee (6-2) with 10.

The Red Raiders scored the first six points of overtime to pull away and never trailed again. Shannon put the Red Raiders up 1:12 into overtime and Warren extended the lead with a slam dunk.

Despite their game-long shooting struggles all night, the Volunteers twice tied the score with 3-pointers late in regulation. Josiah-Jordan James buried one from the wing with 30 seconds to go to tie it at 44.

Texas Tech ran the clock down to less than 15 seconds and got Kevin McCullar's driving jumper in traffic, but he missed and Tennessee snared the rebounds in time and got off two tries from deep that went awry.

Moments earlier, Santiago Vescovi pulled the Vols even with 3-pointer with 1:55 to go. However, he was tagged with a loose-ball foul on the ensuing Red Raiders possession and McCullar converted both free throws to get the lead back.

On the ensuing possession, Tennessee had two open looks from 3-point range on its end of the floor but missed both and Daniel Batcho corralled a defensive rebound with 37.2 seconds on the clock. He got the ball to Shannon, who was fouled.

Shannon made the first foul shot but missed the second to set up James' game-tying hoop.

Offense wasn't as big a struggle in the first half when the Red Raiders built a 29-25 halftime lead. Texas Tech extended the advantage to 34-25 with a quick spurt to open the second half. Tennessee pecked away and got within 39-37 at the 7:39 mark on two James free throws.
