Arizona State 89, Stanford 88 (OT): Freshman Jahii Carson scored a season-high 34 points and the ninth-seeded Sun Devils pulled out a victory in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas.

Carrick Felix added 19 points and 12 rebounds for his conference-leading 13th double-double, Evan Gordon scored 16 points off the bench and Jonathan Gilling finished with 14 for Arizona State (21-11), which will play top-seeded UCLA in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Aaron Bright matched his career high with six 3-pointers on 12 attempts and scored a season-high 27 points for eighth-seeded Stanford (18-14). Dwight Powell added 23 points and nine rebounds and Josh Huestis finished with 17 points - including a 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer, nine rebounds and a tournament record six blocked shots for the Cardinal.

Carson, the Pac-12 co-Freshman of the Year, scored four straight points in overtime to give the Sun Devils an 84-81 lead. Huestis scored on a tip in to draw Stanford back within one, but Gordon made five of six free throws in the final 27 seconds of overtime to keep Arizona State in the lead.

The Sun Devils led by as many as nine points in the first half and by eight with 1:10 remaining in regulation. The Cardinal forced overtime by hitting three consecutive 3-pointers, the last by Bright that included the only free throw attempt for Stanford and a four-point play, tying the score at 79 with 41 seconds left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Carson’s point total was the most by an Arizona State freshman since Mario Bennett in 1991. … Arizona State had no bench points when these teams last met Feb. 9, a 62-59 victory by visiting Stanford … Herb Sendek improved to 2-5 as coach at Arizona State in the opening round of the Pac-12 tournament.
