Aaron Bright scored a season-high 21 points and the Cardinal pulled away late to win their conference home opener.

Dwight Powell had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Stanford (10-6, 1-2 Pac-12), which trailed 53-48 with 7:11 to play before drawing clear with a 20-4 run over the next five minutes. Chasson Randle added 16 points.

Washington State (9-6, 0-2) was led by Brock Motum, who matched his season high with 29 points on 11-for-24 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Mike Ladd had 15 points for the Cougars, who have lost seven of their last 11 games against Stanford.

The Cardinal entered the game last in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage at 40.3, but shot 52.3 percent against Washington State, including 24-for-26 (92.3) from the foul line.

Washington State was 6-of-9 from the foul line and was outrebounded 35-28. Stanford’s Josh Huestis had nine points and seven boards, and Powell recorded his fourth double-double of the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Both teams shot well from 3-point range, with Stanford shooting 66.7 percent (8-of-12) and Washington State at 41.2 percent (7-of-17) ….
