Ninth-ranked Florida wasted little time dashing Jacksonville’s hopes of another upset, using a pronounced run to cruise to a 107-62 victory in Gainesville, Fla.
The Gators (4-1) avenged a 71-68 overtime loss to the Dolphins (2-3) last season. This one was nowhere near that close. After Jacksonville took a 6-2 lead three minutes in, the Gators scored 26 of the next 30 points to turn the game into a blowout midway through the first half.
Kenny Boynton scored 12 of his team-high 22 points during the run, including back-to-back 3-pointers to cap the surge and give Florida a 28-10 lead with 10:23 left in the first half. Boynton finished 4-for-7 on 3-point attempts.
The Gators hit six 3-pointers in the first half and made 16 free throws to Jacksonville’s three, building a 58-38 halftime advantage. Florida finished with 11 3-pointers, breaking double-digits in made 3-pointers for the fifth time in five games.
Erving Walker added 21 points for Florida. Brad Beal scored 15 and Patric Young added 14.
Russell Powell’s 15 points led Jacksonville.
The Gators host Stetson on Monday. Jacksonville plays Monday at No. 17 Marquette.
