Humbled by top-ranked Ohio State earlier in the week, No. 12 Purdue bounced back by beating No. 16 Minnesota 73-61 Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.
Purdue sank seven of its 10 3-pointers after intermission. Three of those 3's came during a 15-5 run to open the second half that staked the Boilermakers (18-4, 7-2 Big Ten) to a 44-34 advantage. Purdue led by at least nine points for the remainder and salvaged a season split with the Golden Gophers (16-5, 5-4 Big Ten), who saw their four-game win streak snapped.
Purdue needed something positive to happen after getting blown out by 23 at Ohio State on Tuesday.
JaJuan Johnson, the Big Ten’s top scorer, racked up 24 points. Ryne Smith and Lewis Jackson each hit three 3-pointers on the way to 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Purdue improved to 12-0 at Mackey Arena, despite an off game by E’Twaun Moore, who scored nine points on 3-of-13 shooting in his worst effort since going 2-for-14 for five points in the 70-67 loss to Minnesota on Jan. 13.
Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe amassed 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. Blake Hoffarber added 14 points, and Ralph Sampson III had 11.
