Hugh Robertson led the way with 16 points as South Florida defeated DePaul 71-60 on Thursday for its second straight Big East home victory.
The Bulls (8-14, 2-7) led 53-48 with 5:54 left before a decisive 10-0 run, started by a three-point play by Augustus Gilchrist (nine points, 10 rebounds) and two Jawanza Poland dunks. DePaul rebounded with a 12-3 run before Robertson’s 3-pointer with 53 seconds left sealed it.
Toarlyn Fitzpatrick and Poland added 11 points each, and Anthony Crater had six points and seven assists for the Bulls.
Cleveland Melvin had 17 points and four blocks to lead DePaul (6-14, 0-8), which lost its eighth straight game. Krys Faber added 16 points on 7 of 8 shooting and Brandon Young had 11 for the Blue Demons, who have lost 21 straight games against Big East opponents.
Melvin and Young, both freshmen, combined for 19 points in the first half for DePaul. A 3-pointer by Young and a rebound basket by Faber tied the game 22-22 with 5:35 left, but South Florida outscored DePaul 13-3 the rest of the way for a 35-25 halftime lead.
Fitzpatrick and Poland had seven points apiece and the Bulls were 12 for 12 from the free-throw line in the first half.
