Brian Oliver came off the bench to score 28 points and Iman Shumpert recorded a triple-double, leading Georgia Tech past Virginia Tech, 72-57, in Atlantic Coast Conference action Tuesday in Atlanta.
Oliver hit 11-of-18 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, and Shumpert finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals for the Yellow Jackets (10-9, 3-3 ACC).
Trailing 47-45 with 13 minutes to go, Georgia Tech used a 17-8 run to take control. Oliver scored the first 12 points of the run, and his 3-pointer with 3:48 left gave the Yellow Jackets a 62-55 lead. After the Hokies (13-6, 3-3) pulled within 62-57, Shumpert scored a basket and hit three free throws for a 10-point lead with 1:09 left.
Manny Atkins’ layup capped an 8-0 first-half run that gave Virginia Tech a 17-10 lead with 11:36 to go. Georgia Tech pulled within one point on four separate occasions, but Virginia Tech carried a 39-36 advantage into halftime.
Jeff Allen led Virginia Tech with 18 points. Malcolm Delaney, the Hokies’ leading scorer coming in at 18.9 points, finished with just eight on 3-of-11 shooting.
Georgia Tech hosts Maryland on Sunday. Virginia Tech returns home to face Miami on Sunday.
