West Virginia bounced back from a disappointing loss with a 56-46 win over South Florida Sunday in Morgantown, W.V.
The Mountaineers (13-5, 4-2 Big East) were upset by instate-rival Marshall Wednesday, but had little trouble of disposing of the struggling Bulls (7-14, 1-7 Big East).
West Virginia held South Florida scoreless for close to six minutes in the first half and took a 27-16 lead into intermission. The Mountaineers maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half. The Bulls did cut the deficit to seven on a Jawanza Poland 3-pointer with 1:44 to play, but couldn't get any closer.
Kevin Jones, John Flowers and Casey Mitchell each had 13 points to lead a balanced Mountaineer attack. Mitchell added 14 rebounds, seven coming on the offensive end.
South Florida went 1 for 13 from 3-point range and shot 31.4 percent from the field. Augustus Gilchrist had a game-high 20 points, but was the only Bull in double figures.
West Virginia hosts No. 15 Louisville Wednesday. South Florida will look to bounce back against DePaul Thursday.
