Ralph Sampson III and Trevor Mbakwe each scored 13 points as No. 19 Minnesota shot 63 percent and dominated the boards en route to a 69-64 win over Michigan in a Big Ten Conference game Saturday.
Minnesota (15-4, 4-3 Big Ten) has won three straight and also snapped a four-game losing streak to Michigan (11-9, 1-6).
Mbakwe, the Big Ten’s leading rebounder (10.4), came off the bench for the third straight game and sparked the Golden Gophers with 10 first-half points and seven rebounds in the second half.
The Wolverines were outrebounded by the more physical Golden Gophers 37-13 and made just 12-of-35 3-point field goals in losing their sixth straight game.
Blake Hoffarber added 12 points, including nine in the final 4:32, and six assists as Minnesota won for the first time on the road since a December victory at Saint Joseph’s. Rodney Williams also contributed 10 points for the Gophers.
Freshman Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a career-high 20 to lead Michigan, while Zack Novak and Darius Morris each tallied 11.
Michigan has lost 11 straight against ranked opponents.
