Senior guard Nolan Smith scored 29 points and top-ranked Duke bounced back from its only loss with a 76-60 home win over Virginia on Saturday.
It wasn’t easy, though. The Blue Devils missed 11 of their first 12 3-point tries and trailed by 10 late in the first half. They still trailed by seven with just over 14 minutes remaining.
Layups by Seth Curry and Smith sparked a 27-10 Duke run, and the Blue Devils (16-1, 3-1) began erasing the memory of their five-point loss at Florida State three days earlier.
Virginia (10-7, 1-2) came out hot, hitting 5 of its first eight 3-pointers. The Cavaliers couldn’t find many open looks after that. Guards Mustapha Farrakhan and Joe Harris, who combined to hit 6 of 8 from beyond the arc, finished with 15 points each.
Smith came into the game in a 11-for-35 shooting slump. He broke out in a big way, hitting 10 of 19 shots and adding seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Andre Dawkins added 14 points, Kyle Singler 13.
Duke clamped down on the Cavaliers, holding them to 34.5 percent shooting.
