Tyler Zeller scored 12 points and had five rebounds as North Carolina extended its winning streak to four games with a 62-56 win over Virginia on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
Zeller, the only Tar Heel to reach double figures, hit 4-of-10 shots and sank all four of his free-throw shots as the Tar Heels (11-4 overall, 1-0 ACC) won their league opener.
In a low-scoring, defensive battle, the free-throw line was the difference. The Tar Heels were 19 of 27 (70.4 percent), but 10 of their makes came in the final 2 minutes and 30 seconds to help seal the hard-fought victory. North Carolina made seven more free throws than Virginia attempted.
The Cavaliers (10-6, 1-1) pulled to within 57-56 with 37 seconds left on two layups by Jontel Evans, but North Carolina scored the final five points on four free throws by Dexter Strickland and one by Harrison Barnes.
Virginia’s K.T. Harrell finished with 13 points, and Evans and Mustapha Farrakhan finished with 11 points apiece.
