Marcus Morris had 16 points and nine rebounds Saturday as No. 6 Kansas handed Arizona its first loss of the season 87-79 in the championship game of the iBN Sports Las Vegas Invitational.
Six players scored in double figures for Kansas (6-0), including Markieff Morris (15) and Thomas Robinson (14). Junior guard Tyshawn Taylor and sophomore guard Travis Releford each added 10 in the Jayhawks’ first real test of the season. Guard Tyrel Reed had 13 points.
Arizona (5-1) was led by sophomore guard Derrick Williams, who had 27 points (9 for 15 from the field) and seven rebounds before fouling out with 2:27 left and Arizona trailing by five. Lamont Jones added 11 points for the Wildcats.
Kansas, which led by as many as 16 in the first half and took a 44-39 into halftime, entered the game with the biggest victory margin in the nation at 40.8 points.
Arizona took its first lead 52-51 on Solomon Hill’s layup with 15:14 remaining. Kyle Fogg (18 points) hit a jumper with 9:30 left to give the Wildcats a four-point lead.
Kansas took control late, however, and Arizona struggled after Williams exited the game.
