Langston Galloway led the way with 20 points and eight assists and Carl Jones chipped in 21 points as Saint Joseph’s outlasted Rutgers, 76-70, on Friday in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
Idris Hilliard was the only other player in double figures with 10 points for the Hawks (3-2), who have won three straight since opening the seasons with losses to Western Kentucky and Penn State.
St. Joe’s used a 12-0 spurt in the first half to take the lead and went into the break with a 34-28 edge. The Scarlet Knights stayed within single digits for most of the second half, pulling as close as 64-63 when Austin Jackson converted a layup with 3:34 left to play.
But the Hawks did not fold, ripping off an 8-0 run capped by Charoy Bentley’s 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining to put the game away.
Mike Coburn finished with 13 points for Rutgers (3-2), which needs all the wins it can get before a daunting Big East slate begins after the New Year.
