Guards Isaiah Thomas and CJ Wilcox scored 18 and 17 points to lead five Washington players in double figures, and the Huskies routed Virginia 106-63 in the first round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
No. 11 UW (3-0) forced Virginia (2-2) into 12 first half turnovers, preventing Tony Bennett’s team from utilizing his trademark ball-control offense. The Huskies rattled off 55 points in the first half, and 51 in the second.
The 106 points is the most a Bennett-coached team has ever surrendered, and the only time one has giving up triple digits.
Wilcox nailed four 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds, while Abdul Gaddy and Scott Suggs scored 12 points each to pace head coach Lorenzo Romar’s uptempo style.
The pre-season media selection to win the Pacific 10 Conference, UW gets an opportunity to prove its No. 11 ranking Tuesday when it faces No. 9 Kentucky in the Maui Invitational semifinal.
The loss is Virginia’s second consecutive against a Pac-10 opponent. The Cavaliers dropped an 81-60 decision Nov. 18 at Stanford, on a layover en route to Maui.
Joe Harris led all scorers with 19 points in the loss. Virginia will face Oklahoma in the loser’s bracket Tuesday.
