Kalin Lucas scored 28 points and keyed a 15-1 second half run to lead Michigan State in averting an historic upset against Chaminade, 82-74, at the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Chaminade knocked off top ranked Virginia 28 years ago, and with Virginia coincidentally in Maui Monday night, the Silver Swords fought to make history again.

The annual hosts of the Maui Invitational jumped ahead early, leading by as much as eight points in the first half. Guard Steven Bennett was a foil to Lucas, scoring 20 points and dishing 11 assists.

No. 2 MSU battled back to tie it by halftime. The Silver Swords missed a lay-up and dunk before the buzzer that would have given them the lead.

MSU carried its momentum into the second half, with Lucas setting the pace. He hit 11 of 18 field goals and all five of his free throw attempts. Korie Lucious connected for three 3-pointers and 13 points to complement Lucas, and Draymond Green had a strong all-around night with 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The Spartans went ahead by double digits in the second half, but Chaminade refused to be put away. Mamadou Diarra had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Shane Hanson added 15 points in the losing effort.
