Rondo handed out 15 assists for his 21st straight game in double figures and Brandon Bass chipped in 18 points and 11 boards for the Celtics, who began a four-game road trip with a poor effort at Toronto on Friday.

Boston started out slowly again on Saturday but picked it up in the second quarter and went into the break tied at 48-48.

The Celtics picked it up on the defensive end after the half, holding the Nets to 13 points in the third quarter as they took control. Avery Bradley, who finished with 18 points, hit a trio of 3-pointers in the frame and Garnett scored four points during an 11-3 burst that opened the period and put Boston in control for good.

The Nets, who shot 53 percent in the first half, managed one field goal in the first 6:22 of the fourth quarter as the Celtics stretched it out. New Jersey has dropped two of three.

Rondo’s alley-oop to Greg Stiemsma with 3:31 left pushed it to 87-70 and ended the night for most of the starters.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Deron Williams collected 12 points and 14 assists and Gerald Green scored 15 points off the bench for New Jersey. … The Celtics, who rank last in the NBA in rebounding, had a 51-42 edge on the glass. Boston will play its third game in as many days at Charlotte on Sunday.
