Spencer Torkelson had two hits and drove in Detroit's lone run. Matthew Boyd (0-1) gave up two runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Tigers scored their run in the bottom of the first. Javier Baez reached on a two-out infield single. Kerry Carpenter struck out, but the pitch bounced past catcher Connor Wong, allowing Carpenter to reach base. Torkelson's single to left brought in Baez.

Boston tied it the next inning. Enrique Hernandez walked with one out and scored on Casas' double to right.

Wong led off the fifth with a double to left. Refsnyder followed with an RBI single.

Boston nudged the lead to 3-1 against Alex Lange in the seventh. Refsnyder drew a one-out walk and moved to third on Rafael Devers' single. Justin Turner knocked in Refsnyder with a sacrifice fly.

Detroit threatened in the eighth with Chris Martin on the mound. Akil Baddoo and Riley Greene hit back-to-back, one-out singles, and Baez grounded out to advance the runners. Carpenter then bounced out to first, leaving the runners stranded.

Casas pushed Boston's advantage to three runs when he led off the ninth against Chasen Shreve with his second homer this season, which landed over the right-centerfield wall.

Jansen entered the game in the bottom of the inning. Torkelson blooped a single to lead off the inning. Center fielder Adam Duvall injured his arm diving for the ball and left the game.

Nick Maton struck out before Miguel Cabrera ripped a double down the left-field line. Jonathan Schoop drew a walk to load the bases. Zach McKinstry flied out, bringing up Baddoo, who struck out on three pitches.
