The Los Angeles Angels traded away their starting pitcher, a starting outfielder and their closer before the game, but their replacements still managed to earn a 3-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics in Anaheim, Calif., on Tuesday.

Jose Suarez (3-4), starting in place of Noah Syndergaard, who was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, gave up just one unearned run in five innings. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five.

Jo Adell, starting in left field in place of Brandon Marsh, who was also traded to the Phillies, singled and came around to score the Angels' second run of the game.

Left-hander Jose Quijada threw a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his second save of the season. He took over for Raisel Iglesias, who was dealt to the Atlanta Braves.

The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when David Fletcher led off with a home run off A's starter Cole Irvin. Irvin (6-8) was on the mound in place of scheduled starter Frankie Montas, who was traded to the New York Yankees earlier Tuesday.

Los Angeles increased its advantage to 2-0 in the second inning, getting help from the Oakland defense. With two outs, Adell reached on an infield single and took second on the play because of a throwing error by third baseman Jonah Bride.

Phil Gosselin followed with a grounder to shortstop Elvis Andrus, who also threw the ball away, allowing Adell to score.

The Angels made it 3-0 in the fourth inning after Jared Walsh doubled and scored on a single by Gosselin.

Suarez held the A's scoreless for four innings before they broke through in the fifth. Bride walked, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Sean Murphy's one-out single.

But the Angels bullpen shut out the A's the rest of the way, starting with a scoreless inning from Andrew Wantz. Jimmy Herget followed with two scoreless frames to set the stage for Quijada.
