Adalberto Mondesi tripled, homered and tied his career high with four RBIs to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 9-2 pounding of the visiting Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

Mondesi's homer was his sixth of the season. Alex Gordon hit his 10th homer, a two-run blast.

Drew Butera had a pair of doubles while scoring a run and driving in another. Brett Phillips drove in two runs and scored one, as the bottom three hitters in the Royals' lineup had seven RBIs.

Kansas City starter Danny Duffy (8-11) gave up just one run on two hits while walking three and striking out six in six innings. He had lost his previous two starts this season against Detroit while giving up 13 earned runs.

Tigers starter Michael Fulmer surrendered seven runs on eight hits, including seven for extra bases, in 3 2/3 innings. Fulmer (3-10) was making his second start since the All-Star break after recovering from an oblique strain.

Mikie Mahtook drove in both Tigers runs, including a solo homer.

Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias departed in the fourth with a lower abdominal strain.

The Tigers scratched out a run in the first. Iglesias smacked a one-out single, advanced on Niko Goodrum's walk and scored on Mahtook's two-out single.

Kansas City grabbed the lead in the second on Mondesi's two-out, two-run homer. It was Mondesi's second long ball in as many days and scored Jorge Bonifacio, who reached on a single.

Gordon's two-run shot in the third made it 4-1.

Fulmer gave up four extra-base hits in the fourth before departing. Hunter Dozier led off with a triple off the wall in left-center field. He came home on Mondesi's one-out triple. Phillips doubled home Mondesi, and Butera drilled another double to left-center, scoring Phillips and giving Kansas City a 7-1 lead.

The Royals added two more runs in the next inning off relievers Buck Farmer and Louis Coleman with the help of three walks. Mondesi drew a bases-loaded free pass, and Phillips knocked in another run with a sacrifice fly.
