Sean Manaea pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, and the Oakland Athletics held off a late rally to defeat the visiting Seattle Mariners 7-6 Monday night in the opener of a key three-game series between the American League West rivals.

Matt Chapman and Jed Lowrie, the Nos. 2-3 hitters in the A's lineup, each went 3-for-5. Chapman hit three doubles and drove in two runs, and Lowrie had two doubles and four RBIs as Oakland extended its lead over the Mariners to 2 1/ 2 games for the AL's second and final wild-card playoff berth.

Manaea (11-8) allowed two runs on five hits to beat Seattle for the second time in three tries this season. The left-hander walked two and struck out three.

Trailing 7-1 after seven innings, the Mariners rallied.

With two outs in the eighth, Mitch Haniger singled to end Manaea's night. Right-hander Emilio Pagan, a former Mariner, allowed back-to-back singles to Cameron Maybin and Jean Segura, the latter knocking in a run, before being relieved by right-hander Lou Trivino. Nelson Cruz singled to right to make it 7-3, but Trivino caught Seager looking at a called third strike to end the inning.

Right-hander Jeurys Familia came on in the ninth for Oakland, but he walked all three batters he faced to bring the tying run to the plate and right-handed closer Blake Treinen in from the bullpen.

Treinen struck out pinch hitter Chris Herrmann, then threw a wild pitch that made it 7-4. A two-run single by Haniger pulled the Mariners within 7-6.

Treinen struck out Maybin for the second out before Segura reached on an infield single, moving Haniger to second. Treinen then fanned cleanup hitter Nelson Cruz to end it, securing his 31st save of the season.

Mariners left-hander Marco Gonzales (12-8) lost his third consecutive start. He allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings with three walks and four strikeouts.

The A's made it 7-1 in the sixth with three runs off Mariners right-hander Casey Lawrence.
