Clayton Richard went 6 2/3 innings before allowing a hit Sunday afternoon and Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer in front of his hometown fans as the San Diego Padres scored a 3-1 win in Miami to take two of three from the Marlins.

Miguel Rojas broke up Richard's bid for the no-hitter with a clean, ground-ball single to center with two outs in the seventh.

The 34-year-old Richard departed after seven innings, having allowed one run on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts. He had thrown 94 pitches. Richard, who also hit a batter in the first before retiring 15 straight Marlins, has won two straight starts and is 5-6 on the season.

Relievers Kirby Yates and Brad Hand closed out the win with Hand getting his 19th save. Hand retired the final three Marlins on eight pitches to give the Padres four straight series wins for the first time since 2015. The Padres are 8-3 over their last 11 games.

The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second when Hunter Renfroe opened the inning with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch by Marlins starter Jose Urena (1-8) and scored on Freddy Galvis' fourth sacrifice fly of the season.

Travis Jankowski led off the sixth with a single and scored on Hosmer's eighth homer of the season. The native of South Miami drove a Urena fastball 413 feet, just clearing the fence in center.

Richard was seeking to throw the first no-hitter in Padres history. The Padres have played 7,881 games since joining the National League as an expansion team in 1969 and are the only major league team without a no-hitter.

The closest the Marlins came to a hit before the seventh was a first-inning drive to center by Cameron Maybin that Padres center fielder Manuel Margot caught as he made contact with the wall. Renfroe made a running catch of a Lewis Brinson drive to right to open the fifth.

Richard entered the seventh having thrown only 75 pitches.

He issued his third walk to Justin Bour to open the seventh. After Maybin flew out to right, Brinson hit a sharp grounder to Galvis' right with the shortstop getting a force at second for the second out of the inning.

Rojas followed with his single to center to break up the no-hitter. JT Riddle then hit a ground single to right to drive home Brinson with the Marlins' only run.
