PHOENIX -- The San Diego Padres will not make the playoffs, but they are making it difficult on their fellow National League West teams who are in prime position.

Wil Myers' second home run of the game sparked a six-run ninth inning as San Diego overcame a six-run deficit with eight runs in the final three innings for an 8-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Saturday.

"We haven't come back from five down in the ninth inning, so it's as big as it gets," San Diego manager Andy Green said.

"It's against a very good baseball team, a playoff-caliber team. It's late in the season with a younger group of guys who have proved very resilient. It's fun to see that. It's fun to see a team fire back and keep fighting all the way to the end."

Carlos Asuaje had the game-tying single off closer Fernando Rodney (4-4), and the go-ahead run scored on left fielder David Peralta's fielding error as the Padres won their second straight against Arizona. They won three of four from the NL West-leading Dodgers last week.

Myers' second homer, off Andrew Chafin, brought the Padres within 7-4, and Rodney retired only one of the six batters he faced while giving up four hits and a walk.

Jabari Blash walked and took second on a wild pitch after Rodney struck out the first batter he faced. Austin Hedges hit an RBI double and pinch-hitter Erick Aybar singled to make it 7-6.

Manuel Margot singled before Asuaje hit an opposite-field single to left field, and Aybar and Margot scored when the ball got past Peralta for a two-base error to make it 8-7.

"The ninth inning was definitely magical," Asuaje said.

"I can't say enough about the guys before me who set up that situation. I was fortunate to get a pitch and do what I intended to do with it. The first couple of pitches were down and away, and I figured he was going to pepper me away, so I leaned over the plate a little bit."

Phil Maton (3-0) gave up Peralta's single in the eighth inning for a 7-2 lead before Brad Hand pitched out of a two-out, bases loaded situation in the ninth for his 17th save.

J.D. Martinez singled in the ninth after Jake Lamb walked to put runners on first and third with one out before A.J. Pollock popped up. Pinch-hitter Adam Rosales was hit by a pitch and Hand struck out Ketel Marte.

Rodney blew his sixth save in 42 chances this season.

"Tough night, tough ball game, tough loss," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "I thought we did everything right until the final inning.

"I will replay it all night long. I believe in the decisions I made. There were some reasons and a strategy that I followed and it just didn't work out. I am not going to second guess myself and beat myself up."

Daniel Descalso had two hits and a home run for Arizona (82-60), which lost its second straight after winning 13 in a row.

Martinez had four singles and an RBI and Peralta had two singles and three RBIs.

Arizona starter Zack Godley gave up an infield single to Margot, the first batter of the game, but did not give up another hit until Yangervis Solarte doubled with two out in the seventh inning. Myers followed with his first home run to cut the gap to 6-2.

Godley gave up two runs and four hits. He struck out nine, one short of a season high, and did not walk a batter for the first time in 22 starts this season.

Chris Iannetta had two hits and an RBI and Paul Goldschmidt singled in a run in his return to the lineup after missing five games with right elbow soreness that required a cortisone shot.

Descalso, starting at second base after playing first base and left field Friday, homered in a two-run sixth for a 6-0 lead. His 10th homer extended his career high.

Descalso and Ketel Marte reached base four times apiece with two hits and two walks. Descalso scored three runs and Marte two.

NOTES: Arizona RHP Randall Delgado (flexor strain) will have his MRI sent to Dr. James Andrews next week for further evaluation, the Diamondbacks said. The injury is often a precursor to Tommy John surgery. Delgado, who has been on the disabled list since July 16, will be shut down for the rest of the season. ... Arizona recalled LHP Anthony Banda, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker and IF Ildemaro Vargas from Triple-A Reno on Saturday, one day after Reno was eliminated from the Pacific Coast League playoffs.
