Pirates 2, Cubs 1:
Travis Snider homered and Brandon Cumpton tossed seven shutout innings as visiting Pittsburgh defeated Chicago in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Cumpton (3-2) allowed two hits and issued two walks while throwing 87 pitches and Mark Melancon allowed a run in the ninth before recording his 12th save and second in as many games. Snider and Ike Davis had two hits apiece for the Pirates, who posted their fourth straight road series win.

Snider, who started in left field with Starling Marte attending to a family matter in the Dominican Republic, began the third inning with his first home run since April 14 against Cincinnati. Jason Hammel (6-5) then walked Chris Stewart, who later scored on Josh Harrison’s infield single.

Hammel yielded two runs on six hits while striking out six over seven frames for Chicago, which was looking to win three straight series for the first time since June 21-30 of last season. The Cubs had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth, but Tony Watson struck out pinch hitters Welington Castillo and Justin Ruggiano to end the threat.

Pittsburgh’s Gregory Polanco, who recorded a hit in a franchise-record 11 straight games to start his major-league career, saw his streak come to an end after going hitless in three at-bats. The Cubs were held to six singles one game after recording five hits in Saturday’s 5-3 loss.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Chicago activated Castillo from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game and designated C Eli Whiteside for assignment. … Cumpton has taken a shutout into the sixth inning in six of his first 13 career starts. … Marte, who missed his second straight game, is expected to rejoin the Pirates on Monday when they begin a three-game series at Tampa Bay.
