Cubs 2, Mets 1: Nate Schierholtz knocked in the winning run with a two-out single in the ninth inning as host Chicago rallied to win the opener of its three-game series against New York.

Schierholtz went 3-for-4 and roped the game-winning hit into the right-field corner while Chris Coghlan hit a tying home run for the Cubs. Hector Rondon (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win as four Chicago relievers combined to limit the Mets to two hits over the final 4 1/3 innings.

Curtis Granderson was 3-for-3 and drove in the lone run for the Mets, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost for only the second time in eight contests. Scott Rice (1-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing a leadoff single in the ninth by Anthony Rizzo, who moved up on Starlin Castro's groundout and scored on Schierholtz's base hit.

Granderson's sacrifice fly in the first gave the Mets the lead, but they couldn't add on, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranding 10 baserunners. Coghlan's solo homer in the eighth against Josh Edgin spoiled a stellar outing from Mets starter Zack Wheeler, who struck out seven while allowing two hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings.

Cubs starter Jake Arrieta labored through 4 2/3 frames, allowing seven hits and three walks but limiting the damage to a single run. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the third and got some help from reliever Brian Schlitter, who stranded two inherited runners in the fifth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cubs designated RHP Jose Veras for assignment and activated Rondon from the paternity leave list before the game, along with placing C Welington Castillo (ribs) on the 15-day disabled list and recalling C Eli Whiteside from Triple-A Iowa. … Mets 1B Lucas Duda went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to seven games. … The Cubs improved to 1-28 when trailing entering the eighth inning.
