Johnson (3-2) held Kansas City hitless for 4 1/3 innings and wound up giving up three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Kansas City rookie Yordano Ventura (0-1) suffered his first major-league loss in his third career start, allowing four runs and three homers in four innings.

Billy Butler and Salvador Perez each had two-run homers and Mike Moustakas added a solo shot for the Royals, who had their six-game winning streak in Chicago come to a halt.

Semien and Danks went deep in the second inning before Dunn clubbed his 34th homer in the third for a 4-0 edge. Moustakas got Kansas City on the board in the fifth and Butler cut the deficit to 4-3 with his two-run blast in the sixth, but Gillaspie restored the lead to three with his two-run shot off Tim Collins in the seventh.
