Rays 8, Red Sox 3: Desmond Jennings homered twice and scored three times as Tampa Bay pounded Jon Lester to even the series with visiting Boston.

Matt Joyce added a two-run blast and Evan Longoria hit a solo home run for the Rays, who battled for 14 innings only to fall 10-8 in the series opener on Monday. Needing a strong performance from the starter after that marathon, Roberto Hernandez (4-6) responded by allowing three runs on seven hits in seven-plus innings.

Lester (6-3) did not provide the same type of boost for his bullpen, issuing seven walks and surrendering three home runs among eight hits and seven runs in just 4 2/3 innings. Mike Napoli drove in a pair for the Red Sox, who had a three-game winning streak come to an end.

Boston jumped on top with a run in the first but Lester could not find his command right from the start. The left-hander yielded a leadoff single to Jennings and walked four of the next five batters to force in the tying run.

The Rays went up 2-1 on Jennings’ homer in the second but the Red Sox grabbed another lead on Napoli’s two-run single in the third. Lester again could not hold the advantage, yielding back-to-back RBI singles to Ryan Roberts and Jose Molina in the bottom of the third before surrendering Longoria’s opposite-field blast in the fourth and Joyce’s two-run shot to deep right in the fifth.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
The Rays, who homered four times on Monday, have hit at least four home runs in back-to-back games for the first time in franchise history. … The Red Sox placed RHP Clayton Mortensen (groin) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled RHP Jose De La Torre before the game. De La Torre came on in relief of Lester and surrendered Jennings’ second blast before settling down to give Boston 3 1/3 innings. … Tampa Bay placed RHP Alex Cobb on the bereavement list following the death of his grandmother and recalled RHP Jake Odorizzi.
