Cardinals 1, Reds 0:
Matt Carpenter’s eighth-inning single drove in the lone run as host St. Louis edged Cincinnati in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Carpenter’s hard-hit single got past Reds second baseman Henry Rodriguez to score Shane Robinson from second for the Cardinals, who visit the Atlanta Braves in Friday’s National League wild-card contest. Cincinnati will visit the San Francisco Giants to open the NL Division Series on Saturday.

Victor Marte (3-2) pitched a scoreless eighth for St. Louis and Jason Motte recorded the final two outs in the ninth for his 42th save, tying Atlanta’s Craig Kimbrel for the NL lead. Jonathan Broxton (3-3) was charged with the loss.

St. Louis rookie Shelby Miller yielded one hit over six scoreless innings in his first career start. Miller, who struck out seven and walked two, allowed the lone hit by Wilson Valdez with two outs in the sixth.

Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey struck out six in four innings before exiting. Bailey, who threw a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates in his last outing, gave up four hits without a walk.
