Ryan Ludwick hit a three-run homer and Johnny Cueto pitched six shutout innings to lead host Cincinnati past Arizona.

Ludwick’s 14th blast of the season off Arizona’s Trevor Bauer (1-2) gave the Reds a 4-0 lead in the third inning en route to their seventh victory in eight games.

Aroldis Chapman struck out Aaron Hill with two on in the ninth to record his 14th save.

Cueto (11-5) allowed just four hits while improving to 4-0 against Arizona. He walked four and struck out three.

Jose Arredondo pitched the seventh and Sam LeCure worked the eighth for the Reds. Sean Marshall allowed ninth-inning singles to Ryan Roberts and Willie Bloomquist before Reds manager Dusty Baker called on Chapman to get the final out.

Cincinnati scored an unearned run in the first inning without having a hit. Bauer walked two and Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew made an error with the run scoring on a wild pitch.

Ludwick’s homer was the only hit allowed by Bauer in three innings. The rookie walked five and threw two wild pitches while striking out four.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Reds 1B Joey Votto underwent left knee surgery Tuesday to repair cartilage damage. He is expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks. … Arizona OF Jason Kubel (hamstring) missed his second straight contest. … Ludwick has three homers in his last six games. … Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton had two hits and is 5-for-8 in the series.
