Bobby Abreu hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the 14th inning as the Los Angeles Angels earned a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.

Abreu hit a first-pitch fastball off losing pitcher Brian Sweeney (1-2).

Jered Weaver threw eight strong innings, but Fernando Rodney allowed two runs in the ninth inning as the Angels blew a 3-1 lead.

Weaver allowed one run on five hits and had six strikeouts, taking over the major-league lead with 211. Seattle's Felix Hernandez, who starts Saturday's game, has 209 strikeouts.

Los Angeles had runners on first and second in the 10th, 11th and 13th, but failed to get them home.

Rich Thompson (1-0) pitched the 13th and 14th for his first victory.

Rodney allowed a single to Franklin Gutierrez and back-to-back RBI doubles to Jose Lopez and Casey Kotchman in the ninth.

Howie Kendrick had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, scoring Hideki Matsui. Jeff Mathis gave the Angels a 2-0 lead with an RBI single.

Michael Saunders singled in the Seattle half of the fifth, moving Kotchman to third. He scored on a subsequent throwing error by Torii Hunter.

Mathis then hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 3-1 lead.

Seattle starter David Pauley allowed three runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
