Carlos Rodon tossed six-plus shutout innings Friday night and Juan Soto homered in his return to San Diego as the New York Yankees scored an 8-0 win.

Rodon (6-2) allowed three hits and three walks, striking out two. Two relievers finished the shutout as New York won in its first visit to Petco Park since 2016.

Yu Darvish (4-2) endured his poorest outing of the year, getting shelled for nine hits and seven runs over 5 2/3 innings. Darvish walked one and whiffed five as the Padres continued their peculiar home-road splits. They are 17-10 on the road but 10-17 in home games.

This one spiraled out of control early, beginning with the end of Darvish's 25 1/3 scoreless-inning streak that dated back to mid-April and featured a stint on the injured list. Darvish had twirled 24 consecutive scoreless innings in his previous four starts.

Anthony Volpe led off with a triple into the left field corner. After Soto fanned to loud cheers from a sellout crowd, Aaron Judge cashed in Volpe's hit with a sacrifice fly.

Things got out of hand in the third as the Yankees added to their MLB-high home run total. Soto crushed a two-run shot to the right field bleachers he visited frequently in his season-plus with San Diego, followed by Judge's solo blast into the second deck in left field.

After Alex Verdugo singled off the left field wall, Giancarlo Stanton crashed a two-run bolt to left that traveled an estimated 417 feet. The three homers covered more than 1,200 feet and decided the game.

In the fourth inning, Gleyber Torres tacked on a leadoff homer to center, his fourth of the year. It traveled 411 feet. Volpe scored on a wild pitch by Jhony Brito in the ninth.

The Padres' best scoring chance came in the seventh when Manny Machado walked and Jake Cronenworth singled to end Rodon's night. But Dennis Santana came on and ended the inning via a lineout and an inning-ending double-play ball.

San Diego's Luis Arraez went 0-for-4, ending a personal streak of eight games with at least two hits.
